Apprenticeships are real jobs offered by a range of planning employers.

By becoming an apprentice, you can:

• Start your career in planning
• Achieve professional qualifications
• Work alongside experienced planning professionals
• Gain in-demand skills
• Earn a salary whilst you study

There are two apprenticeship pathways:

Chartered Town Planner Degree – includes an RTPI accredited qualification and professional membership on completion.

Town Planning Assistant (L4) – for a career as an assistant planner or technical officer.

Apprentices are employed directly by employers and there are a number of places where town planning apprentice roles are advertised.

Where to look for apprenticeships:

  • Search for town planning on the government’s Find An Apprenticeship website
  • Search for degree-level apprenticeships through UCAS
  • Search for degree-level apprenticeships on Not Going to Uni
  • Search for apprenticeships on your local authority’s websites
  • Search for apprentice roles on The Planner Jobs
  • Ask family and friends if they know of any employers who would be interested in taking you on
  • Search the RTPI Consultants Directory for local firms that may be recruiting
  • Training providers may also be able to put you in touch with employers looking for apprentices.
